How to Apply Gradient Lipstick Tutorial

This is an alternative to a straight red lip, a way to add some depth to a dark lip for fall, as well as a way to make your lips look fuller. If you'd like to see how to create this gradient lipstick look, then just follow along.

This is what we're starting with. Add a clear liner if you'd like. I've applied Mac Prep and Prime lip primer.

Put on your lipstick (tutorial here if you wanna check it out). I used a Sephora Real Red Nano Lip Pencil & NARS Cruella Matte Velvet Pencil. At this step, go for the shape you want but is doesn't have to look perfect.

Now we're going to start adding some depth. Choose a darker liner like a black or burgundy or whatever. I am using MAC Nightmoth and just applying it to the outside edges. You should fully draw the liner in the very inner corners and then line the edge of the lip about a quarter of the way out with the darker liner. As you can see, it's not super pretty at this step, but no worries.

Now it's time to blend. You can use your finger or a brush to blend. I am more comfortable with brushes so I used a Sigma L05 to blend. I blend by starting in the corner and blending/pulling the color towards the center. If you use your finger you can "tap" the color in small circles until blended.

If you'd like to add more dimension you can add a lighter color or the opposite undertone. NARS Cruella is a cool red, so I used Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Cream in Sherry, which is a warm red, to contrast.  Dab a bit of color just in the center of the top and bottom lips. This isn't a step I personally rock often with this look, but it's something that can add a lot more volume to the lips if you'd like a larger pout.

Lastly, here's what it looks like with a gloss. If you want this gradient look in a gloss, either dab just in the center of the lip or do an all-over gloss like I did here. I used NYX Butter Gloss in Cherry Pie.
