How to Apply Winged Eyeliner Tutorial

Hey guys! I wanted to share how I have found is the easiest way to apply winged eyeliner. There are lots of ways, and once you get the hang of it you can do it in a lot less steps, but I really wanted to break it down. I also share a bit about how to make it work for heavier/hooded lids. I hope you enjoy this how to apply winged eyeliner tutorial. Let me know what tutorial you'd like to see next in the comments!

Let's get started!

I like to apply my liner as one of the last steps, so I recommend getting all your eyeshadow in order before going forward. I went for something really basic so that it would be easier to follow along, but rock whatever eyeshadow you feel like.

How to Apply Winged Eyeliner

I am going to use the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper, but you can used whatever liner you like, this is just my favorite liquid liner. I hold my liner/brush with the point where I am starting and the body in the direction that I am drawing. You want your liner/brush to do the work for you.

How to Apply Winged Eyeliner

When you're starting out (or forever), start with the wing. You can do this step on both eyes and make sure they are close to symmetrical before moving on to the next step. I have down turned eyes so my lid hoods a bit (and more so on my right eye), I am mindful to not put this line over the crease, so my liner goes more out than upwards. Take your eye shape into consideration and choose an angle that you like and that flatters.

Here you can see how the angle isn't too steep. Ideally, if this first line won't go over your crease, you want to follow the line of your lower lash line. If you follow your lower lash line then it makes it pretty easy to get both eyes symmetrical.

Now starting just below the very top of your first line, drag the liner to the lash line. Change up the angle depending on how thick you want your liner to be.

Holding your liner/brush drag it along the lash line from the inner corner working out. If you're still new to liner, try doing this in a few strokes instead of one swoop.

As you can see this doesn't look quite right. At this point thicken up the liner by adding more to the top (start out little by little if you're new to this). You also wanna go ahead and fill in the blank space in the wing.

As you can see this liner is pretty thin, but this is what I typically wear so I can still show off some eyeshadow with my eyes open. You can rock a thicker wing if you have more lid space or if you just like lots of liner.

If you need to clean up or if you just want a super sharp line you can use a silicone based primer or come concealer on a flat or angled brush to fix or sharpen the wing. I have a tutorial on how to clean up liner.

I like to have  lashes when I wear winged liner to help open my eyes more. You can add an extra bit of mascara or opt for false lashes.

This does have lots of steps since I really wanted to break it down and show you how I think is the easiest way to apply. Once you get the hang of it you can do it in a lot fewer motions, but this is just a starting point. I hope you found this tutorial helpful and let me know  what your favorite eye liner is in the comments below!
